Watch Journal - Patek Philippe Nautilus 5711/1a-014 Olive Green Dial

We are excited to introduce the final iteration of the Patek Philippe Nautilus watch to you today. It is the Reference 5711/1a-014 with a gorgeous olive green dial. This represents the final watch in the 5711 series. After this model, we will bid farewell to this iconic and timeless reference. We may see a replacement for this series, but that remains to be seen.

The Last Hurrah

In early 2021, Patek Philippe announced that the iconic Reference 5711 would be discontinued. Upon the realization that this is not an April's fools joke, the entire watch world lost their mind: how could the brand discontinue its most successful and desired model? To Patek's CEO Mr. Stein, the Nautilus was creating unsustainable expectations for value retention. It also takes away the appreciation of other horological wonders under the brand's vast catalogue. Mr. Stern has previously made it clear that he would like to discontinue the 5711 model to allow the brand to and evolve.

The Proven Formula

The latest Reference 5711/1a-014 still uses the prove workhorse movement - Caliber 26-330 S C. This Patek in-house movement was introduced in 2019 as an upgrade to the Caliber 324. The 30-jewel movement beats at 28,800 vph and provides 45 hours of power reserve, which is considered pretty good given the slim profile of the movement. The caliber features Patek Philippe’s Gyromax® balance, which features top-mounted adjustable weights instead of the more traditional weights mounted to the outside of the rim.

Exceptional Finishing

This 5711/1a-014 unique, porthole-inspired case requires 55 individual manual finishing steps to produce, resulting in both satin and brushed finishes across the case, bezel and bracelet. The case is also water-resistant to 120m. Change that bezel face to a polished surface and you’re back in Slabtown again. The brushing lifts and lightens, with the polished edge differentiating the bezel from the case and bracelet. The bezel which, at first sight, looks appropriately porthole-like actually has eight subtle but distinct facets that reflect the light and take weight away from what would otherwise be a slabby piece of steel. The inside edge carries the same facets, lightening it still further.
